Fred Kaps wrapped his cane in a sheet of newspaper, then sprinkled it with Perlin Pimpin powder before unrolling the sheet in full view of the audience! The cane was gone!
Here are the main advantages of plastic: it's cheaper than metal, doesn't oxidise and lasts longer. What's more, there's less friction in the disappearing effects (light noise).
There's no need to oil the rods to maintain them, they're lighter, easier to prepare, quieter and less dangerous to handle.
